Solar-Powered Plant Life
June 25, 2008 – 1:39 amThis composite image shows the fraction of the photosynthetically available radiation that was absorbed by land vegetation for photosynthesis in the continental United States during the period March 24-April 8, 2000. The image shows the proportion of sunlight actually absorbed by plants versus the total available energy in those wavelengths of sunlight that a vegetation canopy can absorb.
- Dark red indicates areas where plant life absorbs 100% of the photosynthetically available sunlight
- Pink areas have plants that absorb between 25-75% of the sunlight
- Tan areas have zero absorption plant life
