This composite image shows the fraction of the photosynthetically available radiation that was absorbed by land vegetation for photosynthesis in the continental United States during the period March 24-April 8, 2000. The image shows the proportion of sunlight actually absorbed by plants versus the total available energy in those wavelengths of sunlight that a vegetation canopy can absorb.

  • Dark red indicates areas where plant life absorbs 100% of the photosynthetically available sunlight
  • Pink areas have plants that absorb between 25-75% of the sunlight
  • Tan areas have zero absorption plant life
