The hydrogen economy has always been hobbled by a classic chicken-and-egg problem — nobody will make the cars until the gas stations are there; but, nobody will build gas stations until there are cars to use them. Hydrogen cars need a hydrogen infrastructure and vice versa. Several recent studies by the federal government have advised car makers and gas companies to solve the problem by building the infrastructure piecemeal. Los Angeles and New York will be high-demand markets for hydrogen cars and also serve as East and West coast anchors. The first commercial hydrogen fueling stations are being built in Los Angeles right now. Subsequently, hydrogen fueling stations will be built in urban markets across the country where demand is expected to be the highest.
