In 1992, Mei Golan Wind Energy, a subsidiary of the Israel-based mineral water company Mei Golan, developed the first commercial wind-power project in the Middle East at Tel Assania, Israel. The wind farm has 10 turbines generating 6 megawatts, which is mostly used by a nearby manufacturing facility and winery. Roughly one quarter of all electricity generated — but not used locally — feeds into Israel’s electrical grid. Mei Golan recently announced plans to develop a $600 million wind turbine project in the Golan Heights, which will feature about 150 turbines and a total supply capacity of 380 megawatts.
