Salty Waters: Map of Salt Levels in U.S. Drinking Water Supplies

The increased salinity of the U.S. water supply reflects the growing presence of dissolved solids in the surface and ground waters. These dissolved solids also contribute to water ‘hardness.’ Currently, the government does not regulate dissolved solids or salting. The areas shaded on the map shows regions of the country with levels of dissolved solids above the national median, usually falling at or above the 75th percentile.
